Pentax Optio S12

Pentax Optio S12

Last November I took a look at the 10-megapixel Pentax Optio S10, at the same time as the latest incarnation of the original ultra-compact digital camera, the Pentax Optio S. I was impressed by its simple classical design, solid build quality, brisk performance and excellent value for money. Naturally, however, technology marches forward, so now I’m taking a look at the M10’s successor, the new 12 megapixel Optio S12.

There’sa time of the honour, saying, polite version, which is “if it is not broke, do not fix it, ‘and that is the root of what Pentax has done the design and S12. With the exception of a few details of changes in the appearance of the front panel, and, of course, the new 1/1.7-inch 12 megapixel CCD sensor, it is almost identical to the S10. It is exactly the same durable all-aluminium plant in the same pocket-size 87 x 54 x 21m dimensions and the same ultra-light shooting 130g weight. It is the same f/2.8 - f / 5.4 3x zoom lens folding, and the same 2.5-inch 232k LCD monitor. The price is the same. You can buy the S12, a high street for £ 149.99, which was the street price of the S10, when I have checked, even though the older model is now bargain price of £ 99.

There are quite a few 12-megapixel compact cameras the market currently. Recent examples include the Nikon CoolPix s700 (£ 171), the Fujifilm FinePix F100fd (£ 177), Panasonic Lumix FX100 (£ 202), Canon IXUS 960 IS (£ 236), and even their own Pentax Optio A40 (£ 200). Looking for these prices, the S12 seems a total bargain, but all of these models feature some form of mechanical image stabilisation technology. The S12 is missing this feature, so that a more valid comparison would be with the KODAK EASYSHARE V1233 (£ 126) or the Casio Exilim EX-Z1200 (£ 155). (via)
