Netflix Player from Roku

Netflix Player from Roku

A recent interview with Tim Twerdahl, VP Consumer Products for roku shed some more, and a bit of interesting details of the recently released, and it is still difficult to have a Netflix Player.

The player is powered by a NXP processor, and it is the custom in progress (though unstated) version of Linux. The roku development team also choose to use flash memory rather than hard drive a couple of reasons. Flash memory is less the fault, it is more cost-effective, and they also wanted to avoid taking a fan, quite simply, because feedback from home theater enthusiasts said, “they do not want to hear the fan noise.”

The fan noise is very understandable, but interesting (at least to me) part is that the device is in use in Linux. I am sure that there is a logical reason, but how come I can not stream the movies in my house in the Linux or Mac computer, because the compatibility issues, but they can with this device. Although I could imagine it has something to do with the fact that the previously mentioned a customized version of Linux, but it also tells me that there should be about the work of Linux for home users.

In the meantime, I Roku Netflix Player is to collect dust, mostly in the absence of available content. It is estimated 10000 movies available at this time, which is at a low level, taking into account the entire Netflix has to offer, but high compared to less than 3000, they were offering a year ago. I am still holding on to hope more come soon, because the player is really a nice box, which does not work very well. Sadly, those who are still looking to make a purchase is still about two weeks to expect anything new roku Netflix Player of orders. (via)
